Russian Food

Traditional Russian dishes consist of hearty soups and stews full of meat and/ or vegetables. Traditional meals differ from one region of the country to the next. For the adventurous eater, local dishes can provide an interesting flavor of customary Russian foods. There are a number of local restaurants that specialize in Russian cuisine and meals here are affordable.

Restaurants and fast food joints:

Fast food is increasingly available and provides the meal of choice for many urban Russians and features; salads, fried chicken, chips, hot dogs and burgers. There are a number of local fast food franchises and international companies you will find here are; McDonalds and Pizza Hut.

Major cities such as Moscow have vibrant restaurant scenes and apart from local cuisine you can find; Japanese, German, Spanish, Chinese, Polish, Greek and American dishes being served in restaurants around town.

A traditional Russian breakfast (Zavtrak):

Breakfast in Russia is a typically heavy meal which can consist of sausages, eggs, pancakes, porridge and bread. Tea is the beverage of choice though many restaurants also serve coffee.

Main dishes:

Local main dishes usually consist of meats such as; fish, beef, pork and mutton together with vegetables commonly cabbage, mushrooms and carrot. Popular main dishes are; beef stroganoff, Kiev Chicken, Steak, Vareniki, Jarkoye (a tender meat and vegetable dish).

Pastries and ice cream:

Pies and pastries are sold at local pastry shops. Ice cream is also available at some restaurants served as desert. “Kulich” is a popular and tasty bread prepared for the Easter season.
