Also commonly known as Yekaterinburg, Ekaterinburg is one of the major Russian Cities, situated in the midst of the Ural Mountain ranges. The City is home to an estimated 1.5 million residents making it one of the most populous in the Country. Ekaterinburg is the administrative capital of the Sverdlovsk Region. The City was founded in 1723 by the Tsar Peter the Great and was named after the Tsar’s wife Ekaterina. Today the city is an important cultural and educational center for the region, being home to a number of Universities and specialist learning institutions.

Economy:

Ekaterinburg is a major industrial city. Industries here produce; heavy machinery including petroleum extraction equipment, crude oil processing, metallurgy and chemical works.

Tourism:

Ekaterinburg is a vibrant city home to a number of nightclubs, restaurants and discotheques. Sightseeing is a popular activity for visitors to the City. Yekaterinburg is home to some fascinating old architecture such as the Cathedral on the blood (where Nicholas the II and his family were assassinated during the revolution in 1918) and the Iset Hotel. Other places to visit are the beautiful Iset River, theaters, the Kosmos Cinema and shopping complexes.

Transport:

The City is served by the Koltsovo International airport situated about 15km from the Ekaterinburg City Centre. Transport within the city is mainly by bus and tram.
