The Republic of Karelia is an autonomous republic situated in north-western Russia bordered by Finland to its west.

Petrozavodsk:

Petrozavodsk is the capital of Karelia and the largest city in the republic with an estimated population of 350,000 people and has probably the largest population concentration in the republic. The City was founded in 1703. Main tourist attractions in the city include; the monument to Peter the Great who founded the town, the nearby lake Onega and Round Square.

Other major cities in the republic are Kostomuksha and Sortavala.

Economy:

The Forestry and paper pulp industries dominate the republic’s economy. Minerals found in Karelia are; iron ore, diamond, mica, vanadium and titanium. The republic is also a major producer of construction materials.

Tourism:

The Kizhi open air museum: this museum features a photo gallery, a large archaeological collection, historical architecture and paintings.
Kizhi Island Trip: boat tours are normally conducted from Petrozavodsk to this island on Lake Onega. The island is best toured on foot and its main attraction is the wooden church buildings dating back to the 17th century. Lake Ladoga: The largest lake on the European continent and has over 600 isles.
