Early Russia:

Russia and its people are said to have originated from the Viking tribes who arrived in the Country in the 9th Century BC. There was no formal government during this period and the country was in the 13th Century under the rule of the Mongol Empire which had spread through parts of Asia and Eastern Europe. The end to the Mongolian Reign in Russia came when Duke Ivan III overthrew the Mongols at the turn of the 15th Century.

Peter the Great who ruled between 1689 and 1726 attempted to unify and develop a more structural form of governing the country. It was during the reign of Alexander I that the Russian army defeated Napoleon Bonaparte’s men who were attempting to invade the empire.

World War I Period:

The Country was undergoing serious social and economic problems during the early 1900s caused primarily by mismanagement, corruption and poor government policies.

Poverty and unemployment were at a high and this transcended into the Country’s involvement in the First World War. This led to civil unrest caused by disgruntled soldiers and pro-revolutionists which ended with a Vladimir Lenin led revolution overthrowing the government in 1917. Lenin became the Country’s leader until 1924. Russia signed a peace treaty to end the war with the Germans in 1918.
