Georgian’s Saakashvili inaugurated as Georgian Opposition Protests
Georgian President Mikhail Saakashvili has been inaugurated for his second term, as another protest over the election result was held in Tbilisi.
Opposition Protests, who claim the recent election was rigged, have vowed to keep the pressure on the pro-western leader and they are planning legal action to secure a recount of the vote. They say their candidate was denied a run-off ballot.
President Mikhail Saakashvili meanwhile, met Russia’s foreign minister Sergei Lavrov who attended the inauguration ceremony in Tblisi. Mr President said he hopes the tense relations between the two countries can be improved.”
“There are problems. And they are well-known. I won’t go into details. I’ll just say that Russia believes it’s necessary to translate statements about readiness to normalize relations into concrete actions,” Lavrov said. “We agreed to try to implement such concrete steps in the near future. I think it’s realistic,” he added.
President Vladimir Putin had been a fierce critic of the Georgian leadership but congragulated Saakashvili on his triumph.
